Shyness can be paralysing: Here are 3 things that can help

Some people might describe themselves as bashful or shy, but they are able to push through those feelings and meet new people, go to parties, get in a front of a group, etc.

For others, their shyness is paralysing. The very thought of walking into a room full of strangers can stop them in their tracks.

What causes some of us to be gregarious souls and others to be "wallflowers"?

There's no simple answer, but Beverly Donofrio has some ideas.

Here are three ways to help you overcome shyness:

1. Try hypnosis

In Beverly's case, the hypnosis was so successful that she felt free and able to meet people.

2. Therapy and/or Medication

If the bashfulness is so extreme that it's diagnosed as social anxiety, a combination of therapy and medication may be called for. Talk therapy is helpful with anxiety disorders, especially cognitive behavioral therapy.

3. Self help

Sometimes you can help yourself by taking a class or reading a book and then taking baby steps. Use the motto, "If at first you don't succeed, try a smaller goal."

You can't just will yourself out of shyness. If it were that easy you would have done it a long time ago. But you can take advantage of the above steps. Use a friend if you don't want to try the "do it yourself" approach alone.
