Spiders. Flying. Er, milk.
Everything freaks someone out. But fear not - help is at hand in facing up to phobias...
Solution: WHEE Treatment with Trevor Hoskisson from the Harley Street Hypnotherapy Clinic
I haven't been able to drink a glass of milk since I was three. I can't touch a mug that's had milk in it or even pick up a carton in the supermarket. It absolutely disgusts me.
In desperation, I went to the Harley Street Hypnotherapy Clinic to try out WHEE treatment which stands for Wholistic Hybrid of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques).
Thank goodness I don't have logophobia (fear of words).
The 45 minute treatment started off with questions about how the problem was negatively affecting my life.
Seeing as I can’t kiss my boyfriend after he has a bowl of cereal, it’s fairly traumatic every morning of the week. We used that as a starting point.
Just to be clear about the treatment, nice relaxing hypnotherapy chair this is not, despite the comfy-looking chaise longue in the corner of the room. You have to get stuck in.
I was asked to gauge how stressed I would feel at the thought of kissing my boyfriend after breakfast. ’10 out of 10 NO WAY’, was my response. I then had to tap one eyebrow, give myself a ‘butterfly hug’ (hugging myself and patting my arms) while repeating the affirmation.
‘Even though I find kissing Tom disgusting when he has been eating cereal with milk, I deeply love and appreciate myself and the universe loves and accepts me wholly and unconditionally.’ Even with just the two of us there it was pretty embarrassing and yes, I did start laughing, but I was encouraged to keep repeating this over and over for about five minutes before giving another score out of 10 to see if here was any improvement.
As I started to feel more in control of my stress levels, the affirmations also progressed: ‘When I look back at my disgust of kissing Tom after he has been eating cereal…’ and then ‘I hereby release any and all traces of this disgust from any energetic portion and aspect of my being.’
The idea is that you regain mental control of the situation and diminish your fear with the persistent repetition. And you also find out that the universe thinks you’re fully amazing, which is nice too.
I left the consultation with a raging headache and felt completely exhausted for the rest of the evening, but the next day I instructed my boyfriend to kiss me after he’d eaten his milk-riddled breakfast.
On my stress scale, I scored zero out of 10.
I am absolutely amazed. MFW
